Destroyed masterpieces of Ukrainian wooden sacred architecture are returned in 3D models

15 April 2021 , in Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnowski hosted a presentation of the project "Destroyed masterpieces of Ukrainian wooden sacred architecture. Augmented Reality Book », realized by the Kharkiv publishing house of Oleksandr Savchuk with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. The book of the well-known art critic Stefan Taranushenko "Destroyed masterpieces of Ukrainian wooden sacred architecture" was presented, dedicated to the masterpieces of Ukrainian architecture of the eighteenth century., destroyed by communist rule during the so-called "struggle against religion" in the second half of the 1920s.

The pages of the publication contain photos, descriptions and drawings of the five destroyed wooden churches, three of which were in the Chernihiv region: Church of the Ascension of 1759-1761 (Berezne town), Trinity Church 1710 year (the village of Pakul), Nicholas Church of the 1760s (the village of Novi Mlyny), Intercession Church 1759 year (Zinkiv town in Poltava region), Vvedenskaya Church 1761 year (the village of Artemivka in the Kharkiv region).

During the presentation, Alexander Savchuk noted, that the temples were built mostly by nameless masters for the community, village communities, but always embodied the popular idea of ​​beauty, about greatness, about the presence of God on earth. He told, that he built the Church of the Ascension in Berezny 1761 year Nizhyn master Panas Sholudko. Experts called it a masterpiece of wooden sacred architecture. High quality photo, exact drawings and detailed descriptions of the temple were left to the descendants of the Kharkiv researcher of the Ukrainian wooden temple construction., art, culturologist and museologist Stefan Taranushenko (1889–1976). The most active phase of his activity occurred in 1920-1930. He surveyed and described hundreds of Ukrainian village churches, which, on the wave of anti-religious campaign, in a few years it was destroyed by the Soviet authorities.

The most valuable icons from the iconostasis of the March church in 1936 saved the famous art critic Pavlo Zholtovsky. Today they can be seen in Kyiv at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.

Several memoirs of the Church of the Ascension are stored in the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnovsky.
