The image of a beekeeper in the works of Taras Shevchenko

19 August in Ukraine marks the Day of the beekeeper. On this occasion, in the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnovsky an exhibition “The image of a beekeeper in the works of Taras Shevchenko”, dedicated to our outstanding countryman, world-famous beekeeper Peter Prokopovich (1775–1850). He is the founder of scientific beekeeping, inventor of the world's first frame hive. A unique frame hive is on display 1851 year from his apiary, which was presented 2005 year at the International Exhibition in Japan.

1827 Petro Ivanovych opened the first beekeeping school in Europe in Chernihiv region, where representatives of many states studied. The school operated for fifty-two years, trained about a thousand professionals. During the first stay in Chernihiv region 1843 Taras Shevchenko visited the village of Palchyky, where he met with P. Prokopovich, which he called a "glorious beekeeper" in his story "Gemini".
